Malda College is premier college under the University of Gour Banga, which offers postgraduate and undergraduate courses in several subjects. Established in 1944 by Mr. Durga Kinkar Bhattacharyya, it is one of the more sophisticated and enriched colleges of northern Bengal. The college has excellent infrastructure of which is an impressive collection of almost ninety thousand books (in its L.A.N.-connected undergraduate and postgraduate libraries), well equipped and spacious laboratories, an observatory-class telescope, lecture theatre with movie projector, an expansive computer facility, and a capacious auditorium complex, are only a few to name. The structure and constitution of Malda College evolved many times to reach the present point. In pre-independence northern Bengal, there was a temporary college at Dadanchak before Malda College was formally and permanently founded. The college later shifted its premises to Rathbari More, Rabindra Avenue-area of the district town of Malda.
