Middle Georgia Technical College is a two-year college located in Georgia. It is governed by Technical College System of Georgia. Middle Georgia Technical College has a four-county service area with a presence in each county. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award technical certificates of credit, diplomas, and associate of applied science degrees. It was established in 1973 as Houston Vocational Center, with founding director Carroll Smiley, a long-time Houston County educator, who held the post until his retirement in June 1981. During much of that time, classes were available during weekdays for secondary (high school level) students, most of whom were bused or transported from the area high schools: Nothside, Warner Robins, and Perry High. Evening classes were conducted for post-secondary adults and military veterans. Course curricula included many trades: Graphic Arts–Offset Printing, Auto Mechanics–Bodywork, Metalwork, Childcare, Cosmetology, Masonry, Health Occupations, Food Service, Construction, Electronics, and other courses of varying lengths.
