Panjab University is one of the oldest universities in India. The university campus is residential, spread over an area of 550 acres (2.2 km) in sectors 14 and 25 of the city of Chandigarh. The main administrative and academic buildings are located in sector 14, beside a health centre, a sports complex, hostels and residential housing. The university has 58 teaching and research departments and 10 centres/chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh. It has 172 affiliated colleges spread over Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh, Regional Centres at Muktsar, Ludhiana, Hoshiarpur, and Swami Sarvanand Giri Panjab University Regional Centre, Hoshiarpur. Punjab University teaches and researches in science, engineering and technology, humanities, social sciences, performing arts and sports. It was established in 1882 at Lahore (now in Pakistani Punjab). After partition in 1947 , the university had no campus of its own for nearly a decade. The administrative office was located at Solan, Himachal Pradesh and the teaching departments functioned from Hoshiarpur, Jalandhar, Delhi and Amritsar.
