Rainford High Technology College is a community secondary school and sixth form college located in Rainford, Merseyside, England. The school has been awarded specialist Technology College status. It has a notable tradition of producing competitive sports teams, most notably in Rugby. The school is planned to be rebuilt as part of the UK Government's Building Schools for the Future programme. Rainford has had several Chess Clubs down the years, the most recent incarnation having been set up in 2005. Several members who can be considered 'original' members of this latest Chess Club are still active players for the club, competing in national competitions such as 'The UK Land Chess Challenge'. The club's first tournament was an inter-school tournament in St. Helens with 10 teams of 10 players taking part. On this occasion the club finished a commendable 4th. Since then the club has moved into playing mainly the national 'UK Land Chess Challenge' tournament which regularly attracts thousands of entrants in each of its age groups each year.
