Birmingham Southern College

Birmingham–Southern College (BSC) is a 4-year, private liberal arts college located three miles (5 km) northwest of downtown Birmingham. Founded in 1856, it is affiliated with the United Methodist Church. Approximately 1400 students from 30 states and 23 foreign countries attend the college. BSC has a 12:1 student-faculty ratio, and 98% of full-time faculty hold a doctorate or the highest degree in their field. Birmingham–Southern College was created from the merger of Southern University, of Greensboro, Alabama, founded in 1856, with Birmingham College, opened in 1898 in Birmingham, Alabama. President David Pollick resigned in August 2010 after major financial mismanagement was discovered. Birmingham-Southern is often been ranked among the best liberal arts colleges in the United States and was profiled in Loren Pope's Colleges That Change Lives. On March 21, 2011 Birmingham Southern named General Charles Krulak as their 13th president. Fraternities and sororities organize campus social events and service projects. Birmingham-Southern athletic teams are known as the Panthers.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
