Buryat State University is a tertiary education facility in Ulan Ude, Buryat Republic. Courses are taught in Russian and Buryat. It was established in 1932 as Buryat State Teachers' Training College, and it became a university in 1995. It is a member of the University of the Arctic. BSU is located in the city of Ulan-Ude, the capital of the Republic of Buryatia, Russia. Founded in 1666, Ulan-Ude is situated 5500 km from Moscow, the capital of Russia, and 450 km from Ulan-Bator. Buryat Pedagogical Institute is one of the oldest universities in Siberia. It was organized by the Council of People's Commissars of the RSFSR of 10 January 1932 on the basis of the Buryat-Mongolian branch of the Irkutsk State Pedagogical Institute. The composition of the institute included four departments: physics and mathematics, science, literary, linguistic and socio-economic. The first intake, of 146 students, was held in autumn 1932. For the organization of the education process and scientific-research work, qualified personnel were sent to Buryatia. In 1932 the high school employed 22 teachers.
