Frankfurt University of Music and Performing Arts

The Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Frankfurt am Main is a state Hochschule for Music, Theater and Dance in Frankfurt and is the only one of its kind in the Federal State of Hesse. It was founded in 1938. At present around 850 students are taught by about 60 professors and 350 teachers. The study programs include Performance in all instruments and voice, music pedagogy as well as composition, conducting and church music. There are also programs in music theater, drama and dance. The Hochschule offers graduate studies in musicology and music pedagogy. Frankfurt am Main has had an institute for the teaching of music since 1878. The Hoch Conservatory flourished and had a worldwide reputation in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through famous teachers like the pianist Clara Schumann and composers Joachim Raff, Bernhard Sekles and Engelbert Humperdinck the Hoch Conservatory attracted students from around the world. Students included composers Hans Pfitzner, Edward MacDowell, Percy Grainger, Paul Hindemith and Ernst Toch, and the conductors Otto Klemperer and Hans Rosbaud.

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.
