The Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali Guido Carli (Italian for "Guido Carli Free International University for Social Studies"), often simply abbreviated as "LUISS," is a private university founded in 1974 in Rome, Italy. LUISS University is an independent university set up by a consortium of private and public companies that reorganised a pre-existing institution, Pro Deo, founded in 1966. The university consists of three faculties: Economics, Law and Political Science. The University was ranked 6th in an Italian university ranking by The Vision Working-group in 2010. LUISS University traces its origins back to the transformation of a pre-existing Roman institution: Università Pro Deo, founded in 1966. In 1974 a group of businessmen led by Umberto Agnelli decided to invest people and money in a project for the education and training of a managerial class. In later years, the founders were joined by other important public- and private-sector industrial groups and banks. In 1977 the University officially changed its name to Libera Università Internazionale degli Studi Sociali – LUISS.
