Moraine Valley Community College

Moraine Valley Community College is a community college located in Palos Hills, Illinois in the southwest suburbs of Chicago. Founded in 1967, it is the second largest community college in the state. It has an enrollment of approximately 35,000. The main campus of 294 acres (1.19 km) is nestled in the Cook County forest preserves, and the college operates two satellite facilities: one in Blue Island, Illinois and another in Tinley Park, Illinois. MVCC offers its students many accommodations to help them succeed. Night and weekend classes, distance learning, and on-campus day care are all made available to students. Career counseling and services are also available to help students secure jobs after they leave college. To help alleviate the financial burdens that students bear, the college offers employment to its students. Additionally, the college offers athletic scholarships to help some of its students obtain an education more easily. In 1967, the college was officially created after two years of effort, which included proposals, approval, and planning. It opened its first temporary office in Oak Lawn, IL.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
