University of Brunei Darussalam (Abbreviation: UBD; Malay: Universiti Brunei Darussalam; Jawi: يونيبرسيتي بروني دارالسلام) is Brunei's oldest university. It is the largest university in the country in terms of student enrollment and curriculum offered. Universiti Brunei Darussalam was established in 1985, only a year after the country regained full independence, with an intake of 176 students. In 1988, the Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah Institute of Education was merged into the university. The original mission of Universiti Brunei Darussalam, as a small national university, was to develop human resources through excellence in teaching, research and services in areas of importance to Brunei Darussalam. The GenNext programme, which started in 2009, aims to provide a new kind of degree which "will align the university with some of the best practices in the world". The full mission of the university is now stated as: Our mission is to develop the individual and society as a whole, guided by our commitment to the nation that we love and by extension, the world that we cherish.
