University of Jaffna

Jaffna University (abbreviated UoJ) is a public university in the city of Jaffna, Sri Lanka. Jaffna University has four campuses; Thirunelveli, Marathanamadam, Kaithady and Vavuniya. The Arts, Science and Medical Faculties are sited in Thirunelveli near Jaffna. The Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts is situated in Marthanamadam, and the Department of Siddha Medicine is in Kaithady. The Arts Faculty of the University was originally founded on the sites of Parameshwara College and Ramanathan College, both constructed by the philanthropist Sir Ponnampalam Ramanthan, but which were later taken over by the Sri Lankan Government. The Faculty of Science was founded on the site of Jaffna College in Vaddukodai, a school which also was taken over by the Government for the purpose of starting the University. However Jaffna College was later returned to its orginial owners - the Church of South India - and the Faculty of Science was moved to the Parameshwara College site. Chancellor: Prof.M.Sivasuriya Vice-Chancellor: Prof.N.Shanmugalingan The Faculty of Medicine was established by Dr.Nissanka Wijeyeratne at Kaithady in October 1978 with 70 students.
