The University of Sargodha was established in 2002 by an ordinance of the Government of Pakistan Formerly, it was called the Government College, Sargodha. Prof Dr Riaz ul Haq Tariq was First Vice Chancellor from 2002 to 2007, then Prof Dr M Akram Chaudhary headed the university from Feb 2007 to 2011 and Currently Prof Dr Muhammad Ali is working as the acting Vice-Chancellor of Sargodha University. The university is getting popular because there are remote areas around Sargodha, and most of the students now want to study in the University of Sargodha. Govt. College Sargodha, at Shahpur before partition, was shifted to Sargodha in 1946. In 1987-88, post graduate classes were introduced at Govt. College in the disciplines of English, Urdu, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Islamic Studies, History. In November 2002, College was upgraed to the rank of University of Sargodha.
