Canadian Mennonite University

Canadian Mennonite University (CMU) is a Christian university located in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada that awards three and four-year degrees in a variety of programs. A member of the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC), CMU offers classes in three different settings: its Shaftesbury campus in southwest Winnipeg, at Menno Simons College, on the campus of The University of Winnipeg, and Outtatown, an eight-month program of cross-cultural study, service, and faith formation. Canadian Mennonite University was formed through the almagamation of three different colleges: Canadian Mennonite Bible College (founded in 1947), Concord College (founded as Mennonite Brethren Bible College in 1944), and Menno Simons College (founded in 1988). The process for creating one Mennonite university in Manitoba began in the 1990s. A fourth college, Steinbach Bible College, was also involved, but later withdrew. In 1998, the provincial government awarded a charter to the Mennonite College Federation, and for the next two years the three colleges worked towards offering cooperative post-secondary programs.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
