The Santa Fe University of Art and Design is an institution of creative and performing arts based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The university, based on a liberal arts core curriculum, offers programs in contemporary music, creative writing, theatre, art, graphic design, moving image arts (film/video), photography, business, and education. Santa Fe University of Art and Design was originally known as St. Michael’s College, the oldest chartered college in New Mexico. It was founded in the Lasallian tradition of education, a Roman Catholic teaching order in which the schools are run by laymen. St. Michael's College opened in 1859 and operated out of an adobe hut. It was run by four Christian Brothers as a preparatory school for boys. The school was granted a charter for higher education in 1874 as the College of the Christian Brothers of New Mexico. After World War I, the higher education program was dropped, and it was a dedicated preparatory school until after World War II. The school reintroduced the college program, and assumed its modern form, in 1947.
