Haywood Community College

Haywood Community College is a community college located in Clyde, a town in the western part of North Carolina. Established in 1965, the college offers associate's degree programs and online courses in programs such as forestry, fish and wildlife management, and professional crafts. The college's 83-acre (340,000 m) campus includes an arboretum, a mill pond, and a working gristmill constructed by student labor. Haywood Community College opened in August 1965 as Haywood Industrial Education Center with one curriculum program and 39 students. Today, HCC offers over 50 curricular programs to over 2,700 students. Approximately 6,270 more students attend classes through its continuing education division, including adult basic education, GED preparation, occupational courses, and community service programs. In 1975, the Haywood Community College Foundation was created to aid, strengthen, and further the work and service of Haywood Community College. The HCC Board of Trustees approved the start of the campus arboretum in October 1977 and John Palmer was appointed as the founding director in November.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
