Loreto College, Manchester

Loreto College is a Roman Catholic sixth form college in Manchester, England. The schoolis situated on the western edge of Manchester LEA (and unitary authority), next to Trafford and St Mary's church. It is accessed via Princess Road (A5103) at the Asda junction. Loreto College was founded in 1851 by the Loreto Sisters, who were called upon to help overcome the challenges faced in Manchester, which had not yet been recognized as a city, by Irish immigrants who had fled poverty and famine. In 1977 it became a co-educational STATE LEA-controlled sixth form college, called Loreto Sixth Form College. Manchester LEA's state schools had earlier become comprehensive in 1967. On 1 April 1993, like all sixth-form colleges, it left Manchester LEA, and became funded like FE colleges via the Further Education Funding Council for England (FEFC) until 2001, then funded by the regional LSC. The state system funds those who cannot afford private education. The college has earned The Queen's Anniversary Prize for College Education Improvement. The college has had 5 students gaining places on the prestigious Prime Minister's Global Fellowship programme.

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
