Motlow State Community College opened its doors in 1969. The College serves more than 540,000 residents in an 11-county service area including Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, DeKalb, Franklin, Lincoln, Moore, Rutherford, Van Buren, White, and Warren counties in southern middle Tennessee. Motlow College is one of thirteen community college governed by the Tennessee Board of Regents, the sixth largest system of higher education in the nation. Affiliate TBR institutions include six universities and 26 technology centers. The TBR educates more than 180,000 students each year. The Motlow family donated 187 acres (0.76 km) of land on which the college is built; subsequently, the college bears the family name—Motlow College. Motlow honors Senator Motlow; his sister, Mrs. James Boyd; his brothers, Connor, Robert, and D.E.; his mother, Mrs. Lem Motlow; and his uncle, Tom Motlow for their significant contributions. The family are descendants of Jack Daniel, the original proprietor of Jack Daniel Distillery. Dr. MaryLou Apple began serving as Motlow’s fifth and current president in 2006.
