Rutgers University in Camden, New Jersey, USA (Rutgers–Camden), is a state-funded, coeducational, public, research university. Founded in the 1920s, Rutgers–Camden began as an amalgam of the South Jersey Law School and the College of South Jersey. It is the southernmost of the three regional campuses of Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey. Rutgers–Camden is situated at the crossroads of the Washington-New York and Philadelphia-Atlantic City corridors. The college's hallmark and mission is "Prestige, Opportunity, Tradition, and Value." Rutgers was chartered in 1766. Chartered in New Brunswick as Queen’s College — the nation’s eighth institution of higher learning — Rutgers is one of only nine colonial colleges established before the American Revolution. In 1825 Queen’s College became Rutgers College, to honor trustee and Revolutionary War veteran Colonel Henry Rutgers. In 1864 the state legislature chose Rutgers to be the state land-grant college. By 1926 South Jersey Law School was founded in Camden and in 1927 the College of South Jersey was founded in Camden. By 1945 Rutgers was declared the state university of New Jersey by act of the state legislature.
