Southern Vermont College

Southern Vermont College is a private, four-year liberal arts college located on the 371-acre (1.50 km) former Edward Everett Estate near Bennington, Vermont in the southwestern corner of the state bordering New York and Massachusetts. Southern Vermont College was founded in 1926 as St. Joseph Business School, an institution offering certificates of proficiency in secretarial accounting, finance,short-hand and typewriting. Eleven students were in the first graduating class. In 1962, it became an accredited junior college, St. Joseph College, awarding associates degrees in business and secretarial science. Twelve years later, in 1974, the school moved to its current location on the Everett Estate and became Southern Vermont College, a nonsectarian liberal arts college offering a career-directed curriculum. The 27-room Everett Mansion, now on the National Register of Historic Places, serves as the College's primary administrative and academic building. It hosts the library, theater, Success Center (tutorial assistance), Burgdorff Gallery Cafe, campus shop and eight classrooms, plus administrative offices.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
