University of Chicago

Students at the University of Chicago ("U of C" or "UChicago") are stereotyped as quite the quirky bunch—a group that would rather compete in who most carefully read their assigned readings than a game of basketball. Here, that atmosphere is energized by a genuine appreciation for intellectual progress, with students as enthusiastic about their research as their superstar professors. No stereotype can hold completely true, however—just as many students in Polo shirts and flat-billed caps can be seen walking around campus as in tattered skinny jeans and oversized flannels. Moreover, on any given weekend, you’re likely to find equal attendance at private apartment parties and those held by Greek organizations.

The University of Chicago is relatively small, enrolling about 5,000 undergraduates, and 14,000 in total. The College of the University of Chicago is the sole division of the University that serves undergrads—offering 49 majors and 22 minors—and is split into Biological Sciences, Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, Humanities, and New Collegiate Divisions. The University of Chicago offers its potential grad students programs which consist of courses in Biological Science, Humanities, Physical Science, and Social Science. The university also has six professional schools, which include, among others, a School of Medicine, Business, Law, and Public Policy.

Student Stories

  • Maria Ly is quite literally a Rock Star. You’ll often find her hanging off a 5.13a grade rock climbing route, she is the rock star co-founder of Skimble (which is incubated by Rock Health), and you can find her rock formation photography featured in Outside Magazine.

  • March 13, 1988 was the day we moved to America. Although it wasn't my first time in the country, that date was the beginning of my journey through the American school system. Those eleven years filled me with a lifetime of great memories.

  • Mayank is an inventor and zebra-enthusiast. He developed Stripespotter, a biological barcode scanner for zebras, and is a part of the team behind Facebook insights. By way of India to Oman to the US, Mayank can be found behind the wheel of a red Porsche dreaming up his next big idea.
