The West Bengal University of Technology, commonly referred to as WBUT or UTech, is a public state university located in the suburban satellite township of Salt Lake City, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The university primarily provides programs in multidisciplinary fields like science, technology and management. Funded initially by the Government of West Bengal, UTech is set to become a "Center of Excellence" in multidisciplinary science and technology areas, in studies and research. It provides facilities for the pursuit of degree and advanced-level courses in management, paramedical and other professional areas through its affiliated institutions. The University has been accorded the affiliating University status with its jurisdiction encompassing the entire state of West Bengal. The Government of West Bengal set up an expert Committee on December 31, 1998 under the chairmanship of Dr. Ashesh Prasad Mitra, Scientist Eminence, to explore the necessity and scope for the establishment of a district Engineering and Technology University in the state of West Bengal.
